LET 4 Description:
This course continues to emphasize American symbols, customs and traditions and the history and purpose of Army JROTC while exploring leadership principles associated with power bases, leadership styles, management skills and motivation.
This course also provides Cadets instruction regarding Personal Finance by way of the National Endowment of Financial Education (NEFE) high school financial planning program. Financial development program guides Cadets to develop a financial plan which involves budgeting, investing, using credit wisely, and keeping money safe and secure and the value of insurance.
Additionally, Cadets will continue to explore career planning by further developing their individualized career and/or college preparation plan. Cadets will develop their teaching skills by developing teaching plans, delivering instructions all while using a variety of thinking maps and graphic organizers. And finally, will participate in the March2Success program which helps Cadets prepare for and/or improve their SAT & ACT scores.
Core Abilities: The JROTC core abilities describe the broad, life-long skills that every cadet needs for success in all career and life roles. They are drawn from the overall goals and values that drive the JROTC program. Core abilities are not learned in one lesson or Leadership Education Training course, but rather they are linked to lesson competencies in order to integrate or thread them throughout the JROTC curriculum. In each lesson, the core abilities will be introduced, taught, reinforced and assessed. Every student should know all of the core abilities as they are essential, value-added skills that every employer seeks. These core abilities are:
a. Take responsibility for your actions and choices
b. Apply critical thinking techniques
c. Communicate using verbal, non-verbal, visual, and written techniques
d. Build your capacity for life-long learning
e. Do your share as a good citizen in your school, community, country and the world
f. Treat self and others with respect
Grading Policy:
1st Nine Weeks: 50% from Uniform Wear and Inspection; 15% from Physical Training; 10% from Participation/Bearing/Tests; & 20% from Digital Media Presentations 5% from Cadet Portfolios.
b. 2nd Nine Weeks: 50% from Uniform Wear and Inspection; 10% from Physical Training; 5% from Participation/Bearing/Tests; 10% Weekly Digital Media Presentation; & 25% from the Final Semester Exam
c. 1st & 2d Nine Week grades are averaged to determine the Semester grade
Current Event Media Presentations:
Cadets are required to provide weekly media presentations (usually on Wednesday's) to fellow Cadets covering current news events in local/regional/national areas:
- - Fall Semester (3-5mins); 2 presentations (3-5min each); 1ea in Term 1 & 1ea in Term 2).
- - Spring Semester (7-10mins); 2 presentations (7-10mins each); 1ea in Term 3 & 1ea in Term 4).
Each presentation is to include at least two of the Vocabulary Words (found on this website under the "Curriculum" tab) with the subsequent goal of using as many of the words as possible during the School Year (also at the site is the Presentation Score Sheet>) These presentations are are historically one of the more enjoyable classroom activities and designed to enhance public speaking skills, use of presentation related technology, current media news stories. In conjunction with these presentations, Cadets are to use a classroom computer and projector to display their information. Cadets that do not have access to a computer and/or the internet (home, library or friend) are allowed to present non-digital media presentations with an accompanying note from parents/guardians. Cadets are strongly encouraged to use SHHS Office365. There are two other acceptable platforms: www.prezi.com or www.docs.google.com. These websites are free to teachers and students...simply sign on and create a userid/password...create the presentation and save it online...then in class sign-on to the website, call-up the presentation and give their presentation. NO THUMBDRIVES OR CDs
Cadet Portfolio:
Each Cadet will create and maintain a Portfolio that is in compliance with CCR 145-8-3 28 July 2014 (pages 29-31). The Portfolio contains an organized collection of work based on accomplishments, personality, and aspirations along with a comprehensive plan to attend a post-high school education institution (trade school, community college or university). The portfolio will begin upon entry in the JROTC program and be maintained for the duration of your enrollment in the program. The portfolio will reflect the student’s best work and provide insight and information on the cadet’s personal achievements and growth over time.
Selection for Promotion & Appointment To Leadership Positions:
Selection for promotion to a higher rank and/or selection to a leadership position of increased responsibility is a multi-faceted process based on Cadet performance, knowledge/commitment to JROTC and supported by a recommendation from the Cadet Chain of Command. Needs of the organization and approval by the JROTC Instructor Staff are integral components of the process. Standards to be met for promotion are clearly articulated in the Cadet Battalion Standard Operating Procedure. Additionally, selection for promotion to Cadet NCO or Officer ranks involves the Cadet voluntarily appearing before a Board of Cadets (held monthly) to demonstrate knowledge and mastery of JROTC topics as well as desire to assume a position of increased responsibility.
In general, first year Cadets can expect to compete for the ranks of Cadet Private, Private First Class and Corporal with by-exception promotion to a higher rank. Second year Cadets, in general, can expect to compete for the rank of Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, and Sergeant First Class. Third and fourth year Cadets can expect to compete for the Cadet ranks of Master Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel.
Cadet talent and commitment to JROTC, coupled with the needs of the Cadet battalion, may well cause an adjustment to the above standard template for promotion and leadership position selection.
Academic Standards:
The JROTC curriculum is based upon a systematic progression of learning. The scope, focus and content of instruction are each sequential and independent. The leadership unit of instruction allows for one of many training opportunities for cadets to exercise a student chain of command. Fourth year cadets act on guidance from the Senior Army Instructor or Army Instructor to plan, prepare, and execute training and prepare for assigned tasks and conduct training for younger cadets. Third year cadets learn instructional techniques, and more advanced styles of leadership. First and second year cadets receive education and training. Training is designed to enhance skills, knowledge, and abilities, of cadets and reinforce instruction in leadership theory.
Cadets selected for positions of leadership and/or members of a JROTC team (drill, marksmanship, academic, etc.,) must maintain a C or better average in each course taken at Science Hill (each course that appears on the student’s semester grade card). Positions of leadership include commanders, executive officers and primary/assistant staff officers. If at any time during the semester any grade in any class falls below a C average, the Cadet is required to attend the after school JROTC Study Hall (defined as tutoring offered by respective teachers). A note from the teacher to the JROTC Instructor stating the Cadet’s average is a C or better is required for release from the after school JROTC Study Hall program.
All other Cadets are strongly encouraged to attend the after school JROTC Study Hall (defined as tutoring offered by respective teachers) any grade in any class falls below a C average anytime during the semester. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to have their student participate.
JROTC Curriculum & SHHS Graduation Requirements:
Each semester of JROTC satisfies one elective requirement for graduation. Two semesters of JROTC satisfies the graduation requirement for Health/Wellness. Additional semesters of JROTC also satisfy the graduation requirement for Personal Finance and Physical Education.
Disenrollment from JROTC:
Students may be disenrolled from JROTC if they:
a. Withdraw from school
b. Demonstrate ineptitude for leadership training indicated by a general lack of adaptability
c. Fail to keep an acceptable standard of academic achievement, conduct, appearance, or attendance
d. Exhibits undesirable character traits such as lying, cheating or stealing, unauthorized possession of illegal drugs or substances, or exhibits an indifference to and lack of interest in citizenship and leadership training.
Grooming Standards & Wearing of Uniform:
Required standards are discussed in complete detail in the SHHS Battalion Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Appendix A. A brief extract is discussed here:
All Cadets: Cadets will wear an Army issued dress uniform once a week (each Wednesday). The JROTC program is a uniformed program where discipline is judged, in part, by the manner in which a cadet wears a prescribed uniform as well as by the individual’s personal appearance. Cadets are also required to wear physical fitness attire at their own expense during all fitness classes (T-Shirt, gym shorts, socks & tennis shoes) (Fitness classes each Monday and Friday). Tattoos must be covered.
Males: Hair will be natural color, tapered cut, will be evenly graduated from zero length at the hairline in the lower portion of the head, not touching the ears, not touching the collar and not be over approximately 1 inch in length on top. The wear of braids, cornrows, dreadlocks, unkempt, twisted, matted, or shaved individual parts of hair are not authorized while in uniform. The face will be clean-shaven, except for permitted mustaches. Sideburns will not extend below the top of the ear canal. Male Drill Team Members and Marksmanship Team Members must have a High-And-Tight haircut for all performances/competitions.
Females: Hairstyles will be natural color and not interfere with proper wearing of the military headgear and will not fall over the eyebrows or extend below the bottom edge of the collar. Hair is to be pulled back into a tight bun just below the back center of the head while in uniform. The wear of braids, cornrows, dreadlocks, unkempt, twisted, matted, or shaved individual parts of hair are not authorized while in uniform. Having a portion of hair shaved to the scalp is not authorized. The length of the ASU Dress Blue Skirt is not to be higher than 1 inch above the knee and no lower than center of the knee cap.
Participation:
Class attendance contributes significantly to academic success. Students who attend classes regularly tend to earn higher grades and have higher passing rates in courses. If you are absent for any reason, you are responsible for all missed work and for contact the instructor promptly.
Participation is expected in a few after school activities throughout the year. These activities include Change of Command & Key Leadership Banquet (parents invited), Annual Awards Ceremony and the Annual Military Ball. Cadets that bring a guest to the Military Ball must ensure that their respective guets is a high school student in good standing.
Community Service activities is an integral part of JROTC. There will be multiple opportunities for Cadets to support the Johnson City community with volunteer activities. Each hour a Cadet participates in JROTC sponsored community service activities support SHHS graduation requirements. Historically, Cadets easily meet this graduation requirement.
Competitive Team Activities. Commitment on your part to further the SHHS JROTC winning tradition is the key to success. There are several competitions throughout the year culminating in the Appalachian Region ROTC Olympics. In support of team expenses, there are some fundraising activities that all team members are expected to support.
Timely Departure After a JROTC Activity:
Cadets have a specific responsibility to depart after school activities in a timely manner; key is that respective parents/guardians are available to pick up their Cadet at the appointed time. Violation of this places the Cadet at risk of disciplinary action IAW the SHHS Student Handbook. As a matter of routine, after school practice sessions end at 4pm and the Cadet's ride is expected to be available at that time.
Academic Honesty:
Students are expected to do their own work unless advised that collaboration is acceptable. This means that you may use facts from other sources if you re-write them in your own words. Anytime you quote directly for another source or paraphrase substantially, you must cite the source you used. When you take a test, you are expected to keep your eyes on your own paper and protect your test paper from being copied by a classmate.
Recovery Policy:
Worked missed, too include uniform wear, due to an excused absence may be made-up if done so within two calendar weeks upon return to school.
Marksmanship Training:
The undersigned student is permitted to participate in JROTC marksmanship training only after Parent/Guardian approval as signified by signature at the end of this syllabus. Parent/Guardian consent is granted with full knowledge that the training will involve the firing of Air Rifles. Parent/Guardian understands that all training will be conducted under the direct supervision of the JROTC staff and under conditions approved by the Johnson City Schools Department of Education and the Principal of Science Hill High School. Parent/Guardian may make arrangements with the JROTC staff to visit the range facilities and acquaint themselves with all procedures and safety measures in effect.
Use of Digital Image or Other Photograph:
The use of digital images and video of the undersigned student is permitted only after Parent/Guardian approval as signified by signature at the end of this syllabus. No permission is required for use of images of large groups of people. Parent/Guardian permission for uses of images is provided to the Science Hill High School JROTC Department. Parent/Guardian acknowledges SHHS JROTC may produce news releases and publications of various types including web-based publications and documents that may on occasion be distributed through print or electronic means throughout the United States and abroad. SHHS JROTC may reproduce the digital image in other mediums and formats without getting permission each time. Parent/Guardian waives all copyright and other rights pertaining to this image. Use of the image will be only for educational, advertising and publicity and other uses for the benefit and advancement of SHHS JROTC. Parent/Guardian consents to the use of the image and release and indemnify SHHS JROTC, students and volunteers, even if negligent, from any and all claims, losses and damages, that may occur as a result of any uses of digital images.

The use of digital images and video of the undersigned student is permitted only after Parent/Guardian approval as signified by signature at the end of this syllabus. No permission is required for use of images of large groups of people. Parent/Guardian permission for uses of images is provided to the Science Hill High School JROTC Department. Parent/Guardian acknowledges SHHS JROTC may produce news releases and publications of various types including web-based publications and documents that may on occasion be distributed through print or electronic means throughout the United States and abroad. SHHS JROTC may reproduce the digital image in other mediums and formats without getting permission each time. Parent/Guardian waives all copyright and other rights pertaining to this image. Use of the image will be only for educational, advertising and publicity and other uses for the benefit and advancement of SHHS JROTC. Parent/Guardian consents to the use of the image and release and indemnify SHHS JROTC, students and volunteers, even if negligent, from any and all claims, losses and damages, that may occur as a result of any uses of digital images.
